Volcanoes National Park was founded in 1925 and it is set in Northwestern Rwanda. It is one of the oldest safari parks in Africa where a portion of mountain gorillas are found and it also makes up part of the Virunga Conservation Area (VCA). On this 4 days Rwanda gorilla and Dian Fossey hike safari, you will also engage in a guided nature walk to the Twin Lake-Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. Your trip begins and ends in Kigali capital city.

Upon your early arrival at Kigali Airport, you will be welcomed by your Rwanda tour guide. Later, drive to Volcanoes National Park which covers 2-3 hours’ drive and your journey will involve enjoying the impressive rolling hills in the Northwestern side of Rwanda. Dinner and overnight at gorilla safari lodge at Volcanoes National Park.
Where to stay at Volcanoes National Park
Have breakfast early in the morning and after, join the rest of the visitors at Kinigi offices with your packed lunch and bottled drinking water. After verification at reception, assemble for 7:00am briefing on gorilla tracking rules and regulations.
The briefing time also involves assigning a gorilla family to you and there are currently 10 groups (Ugenda, Hirwa, Karisimbi, Amahoro, Susa A, Bwenge, Kwitonda, Sabyinyo, Agashya and Umubano group) open for gorilla trekking. The actual trek to spot endangered mountain gorillas starts at 8:00am with an armed park ranger guide. You will spend 2-6 hours navigating via the jungles and steep slopes inclusive of 1 hour of magical encounter.
Walk back to the gorilla safari lodge after your exciting moment with gorillas. In the evening, you will walk to the Twin Lakes to enjoy the stunning view of Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera. Dine and spend overnight stay at the lodge of choice.

Begin your day with a tasty cup of tea or coffee and after, assemble at Kinigi offices for briefing on what to expect on a hike to Dian Fossey tomb site. Your hike involves exploring the story of gorilla conservation and protection by Dian Fosse who also founded the Karisoke research centre.
You may have evening visit to Iby’Iwacu cultural village for you to enjoy the amazing dances and music performances of the Rwandese or just relax at the lodge as you wait to check out the next day. Dine and spend the night at the previous lodge.
Where to stay at Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, you will check out of the lodge. The Rwanda gorilla and Dian Fossey hike safari guide will drive you back to Kigali. Get to Kigali early then pay a visit to Gisozi memorial site in Kigali and later, have lunch before connecting to Kigali Airport to fly back home.
